Tips on Decking

If you’re looking for that extra living space in the garden then building a decked area can be the answer. When you have decided what you want, planned it out, and bought the timber (straight planks with few knots that have been impregnated to make them last) the next task is to ensure you have all the necessary tools, sharp and ready to use. The average 3 metre by 3 metre decking will have at least 600 nails, so hiring a pneumatic nail gun from Jackson and Gocher Hire Centre will make the job a lot easier. If there is a lot of timber to saw, hiring a circular saw as well will saw a lot of hard graft.

The base for the decking should be constructed using 6" x 2" treated timber in lengths and joined with connecting pieces to give it strength. Corner posts should be concreted into the ground to give overall support. The main joists can be rested onto concrete pads. The decking floor is best done with grooved decking timber that is now available though 6" x 1" treated timber can be used.

Jackson & Gocher staff will always be pleased to help and advise on any DIY jobs and recommend which are the most suitable tools to use. See our advert for details.
