Preparation is the key to good-looking decorating. The difference between a good and a bad job invariably relates to the amount of time spent preparing the surface. Neglect at this stage can not only produce a shoddy appearance but can create serious problems.

It is vital that dirt, grease and any loose material are removed from the surface. If you are stripping old wallpaper this must all be removed (do not be tempted to leave the backing paper for use as a liner - it rarely works). Stubborn wallpaper may need the use of a steam stripper, which can be hired from Jackson & Gocher Hire Centre in Godalming. If the wallpaper has been painted the use of a spiker will help the steam penetrate the surface and speed the process.

Preparation work is not inspiring but it really does pay dividends at the end.
